Organic Foods - Which ones do we focus on?

We all know that organic foods are the best choice for us when shopping and eating. But what about the price for those of us who are not able or willing to buy everything organic?

Different sources will make different suggestions on how to handle this situation, from specific items to the general idea of buying whatever you eat the most in its organic version. The July, 2008 issue of Today's Parent magazine lists produce with the highest and lowest pesticide residue levels of the 43 most commonly eaten fruits and vegetables. Here are the results:

Highest levels of pesticide residuepumpkin baby
Strawberries    Raspberries
Cherries          Apples
Bell Peppers     Peaches and nectarines
Spinach           Celery
Grapes grown outside the U.S.

Lowest levels of pesticide residue
Broccoli and Cauliflower
Sweet corn       Peas
Bananas          Asparagus
Avocados         Mangoes
Pineapple

For a more exhaustive list that is broken down into the main food groups and give more details about why you should definitely buy organic or why it is okay to buy conventionally grown foods of each type, see the September, 2008 issue of Vegetarian Times.
